Legally, veterinary physiotherapists require veterinary consent to assess and treat animals as stated in the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966.
However, new guidelines (RCVS, 2020) do allow healthy animals to receive physiotherapy care without a referral if the purpose of the session is maintenance or a routine check. However, please bear in mind your animal must still be registered with a veterinary practice before physiotherapy can commence.
